The Smell of Orange, 2021

The Smell of Orange, My daughter's favourite colour, The colour and smell of henna drying on skin and hair, and the dye bath of eucalyptus cinerea simmered gently for hours, two lands, both home. This work seeks to integrate the two lands to which I belong; India and Australia. In an attempt to reconcile these two countries within myself and create a more cohesive sense of identity this work purposefully fuses plant based dyes and fibres significant to each land and weaves them together. This work contains three pieces woven on a handmade frame loom. It uses naturally hand dyed yarn, simple weaving techniques and stands of hair from my mother, daughter and myself. Through the use of plant based dyes the work seeks to embody the land, and through the use of hair, pay homage to my female lineage. Body and land merged as one.
